Introduction and Goal
The team and I at InSync were tasked with coming up with many different Key Art options for an upcoming movie titled "Monsters and Men". We were given a somewhat light brief that stated that the client wanted to prominently feature the two biggest names in the film John David Washington and Anthony Ramos but were open to other interpretations as well.
Process and Experience
As I was going through the photography provided for this film, one thing immediately jumped out at me, the image of the backside of a police officer. I thought I could use it to build the rest of the poster on top of and I was encouraged to follow that instinct. An issue I ran into that I needed to work around was the character right over top of the police scene was basically missing his left arm, I was able to solve this issue by taking his right arm, mirroring it and then working it into the missing left arm area. I also added the bottom scene to add some color and give a solid place to put the title and credits.
Outcome
Ultimately this piece was not chosen, although it was one of the final picks by the client. I am very proud of this piece of work I think it brought a bit of elegance to a subject that is usually seen as gritty, dirty or urban. I wanted to showcase how a drama like this could have a bit of a cleaner look. I learned a lot from working on this piece, there was a point in the process where I thought it was just not going to work, the colors became muddy, the original idea for the lighting was just not working. After consulting with my Creative Directors for a bit they helped me to take a breath and simplify a bit, ultimately ending up here.
